Mathsson Pernilla Chairs: Characteristic Of Functional Beauty

by Richard Guilfoyle

The large range of furniture (möbler) making styles range from simple, practical items such as furniture for the office or school house, up to the ornate and luxurious. There are certain styles which are synonomous with certain designers, or time periods from which they hail, or even the area from which they originate. Wood has been a mainstay material in furniture construction, and it has been used for utilitarian as well as artistic purposes, especially by Scandinavian craftsmen.

Bruno Mathsson is remembered among the best ever to design furniture in what is known as the Scandinavian style. This gentleman not only created enduring living and dining room sets, but was also well regarded as an architect. His most renowned furniture was first released in the mid-1930's. However, many of those styles are still released in both legitimate and illegitimate reproductions.

The Pernilla 2 easy chair and Pernilla 3 lounge chair are two of Mathsson's most famous furniture designs. Mathsson focused on creating the most comfortable furniture shapes. He once went out and sat in the snow so that he could examine the shape his natural sitting position left and, thereby, study the best shape to accommodate that sitting position. The Pernilla 3 chair exemplifies his findings.

The Pernilla 2 easy chair is quite similar to the Pernilla 69. Both have lovely organic lines, optional padded armrests and pillow headrests. They provide luxurious comfort and ergonomically correct sitting positions. Sitting in one feels wonderful. When they are finished with soft leather they feel even more luxurious.

The Pernilla 3 is equally known for it's comfort levels but that's no surprise once you've seen this Mathsson masterpiece. If you thought the Pernilla 2 had stylish lines the lounger version will grab you instantly. Like many other people both in Sweden and abroad, you'll just have to have one. And if it's comfort you're after you should know that the Pernilla 3 also comes with pillow headrest and armrests. But you also have the option of having it covered in a quality Australian sheepskin for ultimate comfort.

During WWII there were shortages of many materials. Because of this, Bruno Mathsson Pernilla chairs at that time were crafted using unique webbing materials like jute and woven paper. Chair frames are bentwood which can be adapted to all materials from woven webbing to soft, beautiful leathers. The Mathsson Pernilla chair line is so well made that no matter what unique materials are used in its construction, its design will always maintain its comfort.

Pernilla chairs have a female name like many of his pieces, and he seemed to find a feminine sensibility in the curves and bows of these chairs. Not only is the design lauded for its organic lines but it has been said that it's "the most comfortable chair you could possibly sit in". The Pernilla 2 and Pernilla 69 chair are often paired with ottomans in complimentary designs which give them almost the same shape as the Pernilla 3 lounger. Pairing a chair and ottoman to give different arrangement and use options is characteristic of the flexibility Mathsson loved in his pieces.

Bruno Mathsson was a Scandinavian artist who designed furniture. To this day, his furniture designs are still very popular and are increasing in value. The Pernilla 2 easy chair and Pernilla 3 lounge chair are two of Mathsson's most widely known pieces. What makes the Mathsson Pernilla chair line stand out is the variety of materials they are created from. In fact, some call a Mathsson chair "the most comfortable chair you could possibly sit in". By combining an ottoman of complementary design with the Pernilla 2 and Pernilla 69 chairs, the resulting shape is much like the Pernilla 3 lounger. This classic Mathsson piece will complement most modern living room designs (inredning).
